Swimming Pool: 10 Year Cost Projection

If you are planning to invest in a swimming pool, you should also consider the long-term maintenance costs. The so-called cost of ownership includes cost of water, electricity and chemical usage, cleaning service and general maintenance.

The table shows most of the major expenses and compares the cost of ownership of a fiberglass pool, a vinyl liner pool and a concrete pool. As you can see, the fiberglass pool accrues the least maintenance expenses.

The reason is simple: Fiberglass shells are very easy to clean and maintain. Leisure Pool’s  6 layer construction process ensures stability and strength (Did you know, airplane manufacturers are using fiberglass to build planes?) The exclusive Aquaguard Gel Coat finishes are chemical resistant, and have proven mechanical strength and weathering properties under extensive testing programs and also over the years of usage in Australia, where the UV intensity is extremely high. No wonder, those pools come with a 15 year surface warranty and a 35 year structural warranty.

Algae are more prone to grow in the seams of vinyl liners and the chemicals might react with the concrete to form algae growth. Concrete pools require a seasonal cleaning, which will cost you about 500$ at the moment. Every 3 to 5 years the shell of concrete pools also needs to be acid washed, which amounts to about $900 in ten years. After seven to ten years you probably also have to think of replastering your whole pool, which costs $15.000.

Seeing those long-term numbers lets you compare the “real” cost of having a swimming pool. If you are planning to swim in your backyard for the next ten years or if you want to see your grandchildren come over to visit and use your pool, you definitely should consider those long-term costs.
